Attelier Afternoon

We had Fanja's girls over last week to help make ornaments for the sale. They were reportedly excited to come down and help out, but i couldnt tell myself. ha. They were so quiet! We made a whopping 175 ornaments in the 2 hours they were here. Almost done! My own boys were also keen to help out... for 45 minutes. :-) Sarah, Kezia, and Rebekah These young women are also attending an English Club run by a friend of mine, so we practiced speaking English together as we strung beads onto string. Funds from the Distaff sales have and will continue to pay their school fees and supplies.

Attelier

les grains   It feels like Christmas around our place these days, and it's not just because the weather is cooling. Since Distaff will be in Manitoba until mid-January we're hoping to participate in a Christmas craft sale. This will mean, hopefully, an opportunity to obtain greater exposure and a wider spectrum of shoppers, and the chance to sell Christmas items including handcrafted creches (or, nativity sets; ordered today, woot!), silk scarves (stay tuned for photos of the attelier de soie), Christmas tableware, window-decorations and tree ornaments. tree ornaments Fanja has found most of these ingredients for the decorations that she and her children are helping to assemble. She's also done a great job of noting what the seeds are that she brings to...

Update on baby Evah (the clubfoot op)

Onja, the mom of baby Evah with the clubfoot, came by today to give an update on the operation and how they're all doing. Evah was, i was so glad to see, happy and cooing like any contented 3-month-old. Sigh. It does my heart good to see that! I've been praying so much that she wouldnt be crying and fussing because of the pain post-op. Onja took Evah for the operation last Tuesday. Afterwards the baby was put into casts that reach from toe to hip to maintain the shape of the leg. The money that i (that is, Distaff) gave for them for the operation has paid for all the costs of the medical procedures, including all future casts....

New Beneficiaries: Evah, Sarah

Dndransena has been one of the compound gardeners in our compound for a few years already. I really appreciate his work ethic and his ever-happy demeanor, but more importantly, his enthusiasm to play soccer with my boys. :-) He is a delightful guy to have around. 2 months ago I heard that his wife had birthed their 4th daughter. Everyone in the compound congratulated him and I put together a hand-me-down collection of baby things for them as well as a cash gift for things for the family. We were happy for them and assumed everything was fine. 2 days later Dndrasena came to work looking super stressed and about to fall over with fatigue. I found out through my...

Baby

One of the things Distaff&Spindle has been created for is to make money to pay for medical costs for a woman i know who has experienced difficulties with pregnancy. In the past she has lost many babies in the first trimester because of some unknown cause. It caused unimagined heartache and, reportedly, was a reason for her inlaws to counsel her husband to divorce her, since she couldnt provide him with children. She was additionally the victim of bullying from these family members. When she came into contact with me through a mutal friend we collaborated, using the money D&S's supporters so generously gave (in exchange for beautiful products. ;-) ), to put her into contact with obs/gyne professionals who...
